Seraphim Blue Diamond

Did a diamond referred to as the Seraphim Blue Diamond, belong to the first Nizam of Hyderabad? This is a question that could be answered with an emphatic ‘yes’ but, that would really not be the right response. Asaf Jah 1 the first Nizam of Hyderabad marked the beginning of the Nizam Dynasty. And that also began the Nizam’s control, over the famous Golconda diamond mines.

No secret that some of the most valuable diamonds (of that time) originated from the Golconda mines in India. And these included some fabulous Golconda blue diamonds. The story goes that a fancy vivid blue diamond, was one of the treasures in the collection of Asaf Jah 1. The blue diamond is often referred to as the Seraphim Blue Diamond.

Some variation in the narratives are being heard but, the general message seems to be that the first Nizam of Hyderabad, wore the Seraphim Blu Diamond in an exquisite turban ornament. We are talking about a time when almost all high quality blue diamonds, were linked to the Golconda diamond mines. It is therefore quite possible that Asaf Jah 1, did have and did wear this vivid blue diamond.

For casual enthusiasts of diamonds and ancient royalty, the story would be very possible. But when it comes to diamond professionals, experienced collectors and even, the big auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s – the requirement for reliable certification cannot be compromised.

So while linking the first Nizam of Hyderabad to a fancy vivid blue diamond from the Golconda diamond mines, seems fine – the real big stakeholders would get truly excited when something like the Seraphim Blue Diamond, comes up for auction. The auction houses would ensure that, every bit of information is verified and documented.

A small note about the status of the Seraphim Blue Diamond. Apparently, the stunning diamond was given to the French by the second Nizam – this in return for military protection. If this was really the case, it would be interesting to research the reappearance (if any) of this blue Golconda diamond, anytime after the reign of the second Nizam of Hyderabad ended.
